Eyes

Vibrant deep green.

Nose

Fragrant apricot & musky floral aromas are hallmarks of Viognier & are certainly evident in this wine.

Mouth

Exotic dried pear & apricot fruit flavours abound along with a rich creamy textured mid palate & a long persistent spicy aftertaste, justifying the hype around this vintage 2019.

Winemaking Notes

Viognier (pronounced vee-on-yay) is one of the worlds least planted white wine varieties thats most notable use is in the white wines of the Rhone Valley in France. However, it is often heavily blended, hiding its unique characters. Blue Pyrenees planted small experimental plots of this variety in the 1990s & excited by the results, has undertaken further investment in Viognier, allowing Blue Pyrenees to make small releases of this intriguing white wine. The 2018/2019 grape growing season started dry but delivered very valuable spring & early summer rains followed by a warm & dry autumn, allowing winemakers to harvest at any point of ripeness they chose. Early morning hand picked grapes were rapidly processed, with the free run juice & light pressings being racked to old white French oak barrels. This allowed a slow natural fermentation with high solids content followed by three months barrel aging with fortnightly battonage.

In my opinion, a very tasty wine. Much more on the palette than the present trendy whites imho.

Light yellow hue. Subtly fragrant aroma with hints of varietal spice, but quite reserved for a viognier. It has the faintest tickle of sweetness and a soft, round, slighly oily mouth-feel. Straightforward flavour, pleasant and well-made. A little more ageing could bring more complexity. A quality wine.

Pale-straw in colour, this wine captures viognier’s distinctive varietal cues very accurately. Powerfully perfumed with musky, floral pot pourri and ripe stone fruit scents, the palate has a touch of fruit sweetness softening a succulent palate. There’s haunting floral fragrance in the mouth and a dry finish with a lingering thread of apricot to it.
